（GALEN'S SYSTEM）

Claudius Galen (130 to 200 ad) was able to embellish the Hippocratic system because 500 years of experience was available to him and because he performed animal experimentation. The latter was necessary since autopsies were not permitted in Rome and the experiments were usually done on living animals. They provided an aspect of physiology that could be grafted to the anatomic determinants of Greek medicine. According to the Greeks, the heart produced the vital spirit that proceeded to every organ in the body through the arteries. A most impressive new concept was added by Galen, that of the pulmonary circulation, which explained how the heart obtained the essential vapor (pneuma) for the vital spirit. Unfortunately, Galen did not apply this concept of blood circulation to the rest of the body, and he adhered to the Greek idea that the veins, as well as the arteries, conveyed a life determinant (psychic pneuma) peripherally to the various organs.
